Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit Arrives August 14, 2026
A new adventure is about to begin as Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit brings players back to Middle-earth for an exciting journey filled with legendary heroes, dangerous creatures, ancient treasures, and powerful new cards.
The highly anticipated set will officially release worldwide on August 14, 2026, with prerelease events taking place from August 7 through August 13. Players on MTG Arena will be able to experience the set slightly earlier, beginning on August 11, 2026.
A Journey to the Lonely Mountain
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit follows the unforgettable adventure of Bilbo Baggins as he leaves the comfort of home and travels alongside Thorin Oakenshield and his company of Dwarves.
Along the way, players will encounter Trolls, Goblins, Elves, legendary locations, mysterious riddles, valuable artifacts, and the terrifying Dragon Smaug.
The set transforms memorable characters and moments from the story into cards designed for both competitive gameplay and collectible appeal. Whether you are a longtime Magic player, a fan of Middle-earth, or a collector searching for unique card treatments, this release offers plenty to discover.
bold textNew and Returning Gameplay Mechanics
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit introduces several mechanics inspired by storytelling, teamwork, exploration, and legendary equipment.
Storied
The new Storied mechanic rewards players for building a battlefield filled with artifacts, legendary permanents, and Sagas.
Once you control a permanent with Storied and at least three qualifying permanents, you gain an enduring story for the rest of the game. Cards can then provide additional abilities or bonuses based on whether your enduring story has been established.
Recruit
Recruit is a new keyword action that allows you to draw a card and then discard a card. When the discarded card is a nonland card, you also create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature token.
This mechanic can help players search through their decks, fill their graveyards, and build an army at the same time.
Hone Counters
The set also introduces hone counters, which improve Equipment cards.
Each hone counter placed on a piece of Equipment gives the equipped creature an additional +1/+0, allowing weapons such as Sting, Bilbo’s Sword to become even more powerful as the game continues.
Adventures and Amass Return
The popular Adventure mechanic returns, giving certain cards two possible ways to be played. Players can cast the Adventure portion first and later play the permanent portion from exile.
Amass also returns, allowing players to create or strengthen Army creatures. In this set, players may encounter growing Goblin forces inspired by the enemies faced during Bilbo’s journey.
Special Card Treatments for Collectors
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit includes several special card styles designed to celebrate the history, artwork, languages, and treasures of Middle-earth.
Book Cover Cards
Book cover cards feature artwork inspired by classic fantasy novel covers. These treatments are designed to look equally impressive inside a deck, binder, or bookshelf display.
Dwarvish Language Cards
Five special Magic cards have been presented using Dwarvish-language treatments. These cards will only appear in Collector Boosters and will always feature the Dwarvish text treatment.
Dragon Hoard Cards
Dragon hoard frame cards feature special designs inspired by Smaug and the treasures beneath the Lonely Mountain.
Non-foil and traditional foil versions may appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters, while surge foil versions will be exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Middle-earth Classic Artist Cards
The set will also include 40 borderless mythic rare cards featuring classic Middle-earth artwork. Every Play Booster box and Collector Booster box will include a traditional foil Middle-earth classic artist Box Topper.
The Ultimate Chase Card: Smaug the Magnificent
One of the biggest collector highlights is the special Gleaming Gold Smaug the Magnificent card.
Only approximately 500 copies of this premium version are expected to be printed. The card will appear exclusively in Collector Boosters and will feature a special foil treatment inspired by Smaug’s legendary treasure hoard.
The Gleaming Gold version is mechanically identical to the other versions of Smaug the Magnificent, but its limited production could make it one of the most desirable chase cards in the entire set.

The Scene Boxes will feature six traditional foil borderless cards that combine to create a larger illustrated scene. Announced versions include Crack the Plates and Treasures of Smaug.
